The Rolling Huts: An Architect?s Alternative Approach to Camping

Designed by Olson Kundig Architects, the Rolling Huts are glamping on a different, design-forward level.

Designed by Seattle-based Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects (whom we?ve featured before for the practice?s modern cabin), the Rolling Huts are a group of six architecturally designed platform homes nestled in the meadows of Washington state?s Methow Valley. These huts are a modern alternative to traditional camping and offer guests the comforts of a hotel with the scenic views and quiet privacy of camping.

The huts are essentially steel clad boxes that sit atop a wood and steel platform and hover above the landscape to give guests unobstructed views of the meadows and mountains. Guests can enjoy modern conveniences inside the 200 sq. ft. hut as well as the 240 sq. ft. deck space.

Guests enter through double-paned sliding glass doors to interiors that have been lined with raw cork and plywood. The walls are topped with a perimeter of windows that allow natural light in while maintaining privacy from the other huts. An inverted, lopsided V-shaped panel roof protects each hut from the outdoor weather.
Each hut comes equipped with a small refrigerator, microwave, fireplace, wifi, portable toilet, a sleeping platform for two and modular furniture that can be rearranged to accommodate more guests. For full bathrooms and showers, guests can visit the central barn located nearby.

What: The Rolling Huts

Where: 18381 HWY 20, Winthrop, Washington 98862, USA

How much" Each hut is approximately $145 per night for two people.

Highlights: The Rolling Huts are a modern alternative to camping where guests have the modern conveniences of a B&B or hotel but full exposure to the vast openness of camping.

Design draw: Designed by Olson Kundig Architects, these huts have a design-forward aesthetic from the architecture to the minimalist interiors. Not camping and not quite glamping either, it’s a pleasant middle ground alternative for modern travelers.
