The Ceramic Neotenic Lamp Doubles as a Fixture and Sculpture

A playful take on a table lamp, the Neotenic by design studio Jumbo adds a layer of peculiarity and joyful eclecticism to interior spaces.

New York-based design studio Jumbo, founded by old friends Justin Donnelly and Monling Lee, is inspired by reductivism and whimsy which have led them to create a bevy of objects that are as functional as they are artful. Their latest project is the Neotenic collection designed for Petite Friture, a series of table lamps that double as both fixture and sculpture. The design features a generous, almost bulbous-like shape that?s topped with a handblown glass orb.

The process of creating Neotenic is heavily involved, requiring the base to be made by ceramic artisans and handprinted in Portugal. There is a manual and meticulous finishing of the fixture before it is fired and hardened. The three colorways (cherry, vermilion, and vanilla) and the rounded shape itself are intended to conjure the childhood memories of comfort. Available in a large and small size, the Neotenic table lamps add a layer of peculiarity and joyful eclecticism to interior spaces.
