New York City based designer Joe Doucet partnered for the second time with Odabashian on a collection of handcrafted rugs that he designed in support of the Transgender community. The Transcendence rug series came about as a response to the ongoing challenges faced by transgender people who are bravely living their truth in a society that often shuns them with the hope that we can rise above and move forward with open minds. The bold, four-piece collection aims to be an example that design can transcend and be used for good. In a measure to show just that, they’re donating a portion of the sales proceeds to the ACLU. The uniting theme of the series became Transcendence. I wanted to capture the beauty of outwardly becoming what you are internally. The four rugs each attempt to convey this thought in a different visual language. I shared the concept and designs with Jaime (Odabashian), not knowing if he was willing to go down this path with me, but to my delight, he was willing to throw his hat into the ring. A few months later and the entire collection was ready. I hope the rugs and the thought behind them are received with an understanding of the intent that each of us have a responsibility to use our skills to stand up for what is right.
