Situated metres away from Leonardo da Vinci?s Last Supper, the Casa Degli Atellani invites guests into their 15th-century building whose grounds play host to a museum, the Atellani Apartment private residencies and La Vigna di Leonardo, a luscious vineyard planted and treasured by Leonardo da Vinci.
In the late 1400s, da Vinci was gifted a hectare of land by the then Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, to thank him for his immense contribution to the city. The land was directly across from the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, where he was painting The Last Supper for three years. As Leonardo, a passionate winemaker, painted his monumental work, he tended to the land where he would plant his favourite grape variety, the Candia Aromatica Malvasia.
The Casa degli Atellani withstood numerous tribulations over the years that followed, and it was only in 1920 that renowned Milanese architect Piero Portaluppi restored the building to its new glory. Portaluppi uncovered stunning frescoes from the Renaissance during his restorative works, and also conveyed the modern architectural attitudes in Milan at the time.
Now tended to by Piero Portaluppi?s grandchildren, who ensure the safe upkeep of the property, Casa Degli Attelani operates to its fullest capacity and consists of private residencies, a museum, cafe and Leonardo?s vineyard.
