Snřhetta Launches S-1500: A Chair Made from Recycled Plastic

A chair made from 100% recycled plastic salvaged from north Norway's fish farming industry.

Snřhetta has gained a solid reputation for their unforgettable architectural projects, like the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion, over the past 25 years and recently they’ve been working on a research project that involves recycled plastic. The goal is to help guide the public’s view on plastic away from being just waste and instead seeing its potential to become new materials. Working with furniture manufacturer Nordic Comfort Products (NCP), they’ve developed the S-1500 chair made from 100% recycled plastic salvaged from north Norway’s fish farming industry.

The S-1500 chair was originally designed by Norwegian modernist Bendt Winge as the R-48 chair but Snřhetta has given it a structural redesign. With a subframe made from recycled steel and a body made from 100% recycled plastic, the design has earned one of the lowest carbon footprints on the market.
Fish farm companies like Kvarřy Fiskeoppdrett and Nova Sea provide NCP with old fish nets, ropes, and pipes instead of tossing them. They’re processed and ground into an injectable granulate that can be used for developing all kinds of new products.
