Fernando Mastrangelo’s annual In Good Company exhibition recently launched marking its third year showcasing the work of emerging designers. This go-round he enlisted the help of Milan-based design connoisseur Rossana Orlandi to co-curate the show by scouring through hundreds of applications together and whittling it down to just 14 new works. This year’s focus is on “Collectible Design,” an idea that a piece of furniture can go beyond just function and transcend into works of high art ? where a lamp could easily find itself at home in either an art museum or someone’s living room. As Mastrangelo says, “Furniture is no longer solely, or even primarily, a medium of function. The collectible design genre inspired Mastrangelo to go from handpicking the talent himself to offering an open call for American-based artists and designers that find their work falls under that somewhat undefinable category.
