Without a doubt, one of the greatest challenges I faced during my 10 months of chemotherapy last year was not being able to fly anywhere. In order to scratch the traveling itch, I?d often lie in my hospital bed and use the power of memory to whisk me away instead. One of the destinations that frequently occupied my thoughts was Charleston, SC, a place with some of the most beautiful streets I?ve ever seen. While on a history tour there in 2003, I learned how the city?s taken the time to number each of the cobblestones in their oldest roads so that after they?ve been removed and cleaned they can be placed back in the exact same spot where they were originally laid hundreds of years ago. Over a decade after my visit, I?m thrilled to report the city?s eagle-eyed focus on putting their history first hasn?t wavered. And the immaculately maintained home of artist Lulie Wallace proves it. Purchased from the president of the Charleston Historical Preservation Society, the century-old abode boasts original fireplaces, molding and enviable, built-in cabinetry.
