The classic coat has been neglected.
By me at least.
I have been wrapped up in puffers and field jacket style coats so the beauty of a classic has escaped me. If there is one piece my wardrobe loves, it is a great coat. Winter is my season and mostly because I love dressing up in layers and jackets. For me, there is real pleasure in selecting a coat and working out what I will wear with it.

About now is the right time for a more classic woolen coat, especially if dresses are featuring more in day to day wear. Classic coats don’t have to appear dowdy or matronly; I wore mine over a lace dress with sneakers yesterday; equally a puffer would have worked but I felt like the comfort of a familiar favourite and a change.
How do you choose a classic"
Colour to start.
If coats are your thing then go for more adventurous colours – you won’t stop at one. An investment coat I believe, navy, black, camel or cream are the winners. Followed closely by olive or khaki green.

Shape to fit.
Single-breasted, double-breasted or belted are some of the options; I like a closing so usually go with a button-up style.

Length to love.
Above the knee, on the knee or mid-calf" I wear knee-length and beyond unless it is a pea coat as I prefer the proportions of a longer coat. As a fan of the midi to ankle-length dress, a longer coat is an essential in the wardrobe.
