Theater design, the art and technique of designing and building this kind of a space is a whole knowledge. This is intended space primarily for the performance of drama and its allied arts by live performers who are physically present in front of a live audience. 
So there are four basic forms: arena stage theaters (also referred to as theater-in-the-round); thrust stage (or open stage) theaters; end stage theaters (of which proscenium theaters are a subset); and flexible stage theaters, also sometimes called black box theaters. The design of all these types is based on the relationship of the space establishes between the stage and the house.
