Tension forces need to be predicted depending on the situation so they won’t ruin the final effect needed to be gained. There are more sources of tension: caused by bending, caused by load reversals, caused by shear and torsion, tension near the supports of the beams (longitudinal at the support is greater than indicated by the bending moment; the tensile force at the bottom of the inclined crack is equal to the compresive force at the top of the crack).
Also, there is a tension with the supports of beams and slabs, within the connections, tension at concentrated loads, caused by directional changes of the internal forces.
