Shear Walls and their Use in the Structural Engineering



In structural engineering, a shear wall is a structural system composed of braced panels (also known as shear panels) to counter the effects of lateral load acting on a structure. Wind and seismic loads are the most common loads that shear walls are designed to carry. A composite member is defined as consisting of a rolled or a built-up structural steel shape that is either filled with concrete, encased by reinforced concrete or structurally connected to a reinforced concrete slab.  Composite members are constructed such that the structural steel shape and the concrete act together to resist axial compression and /or bending.
